Next Steps for Dialogue

Friday and Sunday the participants worked with development of future dialogue projects. Friday they brainstormed which problems that they can see about dialogue and transformed these problems into visions for how to achieve better dialogue in our socities. Saturday each participant selected one idea that they found interesting on at that basis they formed groups. The groups created outlines of the projects containing answers on the questions:

  • Why is this project important?
  • What do they want to do in the project?
  • How do they want to make the project into reality?


Below is the outlines of the projects.

Group 1
Why:
* People deserve the right to be themselves
* No fear, no prejudices, no stigmas
* Everyone deserves the right to be part of a community
What:
* Remove social control
* Give a platform for honesty
How:
* Anonymous forum (wistleblowers.org)
* Actions in the streets (microphones, flashmob)

Group 2
Why: There are survial (e.g. waater, climate) and cultural (e.g. education) issues to be solved globally.

What: An online/offline dialogue platform between people from different societies.

How: Through our project we take the first step for exchanging information between our societies.

Group 3
Why: Because we believe that being able to be different and act as an individual could create the freedom that we need to create a better world.

What:

  •  Tolerance
  • Living in harmony

How:

  •  Universal languange
  •  Safe learning envir.
  •  Don’t assume, just search

Group 4
Why:

  •  Source of all problem
  •  Preventative approach
  •  Opportunity

What:

  • Absence of intercommunal/interreligious dialogue interactions

  • Wrong methodology
  • Perception of technical studies (skill workers)
  • Absence of ECA awareness
  • Lack of practicality in uni-studies

How:

  • Mixed schools: Teachers + parents cultural training and exchange

Visiting an Alevi village

Saturday afternoon was dedicated at getting knowledge about the Alevi which is a religious minority in Turkey – around 15% of the population. The participant visited an Alevi village and got to see their local chapel and culture house. One of the challenges that the Alevi have is, that these houses are only recognised by the government as culture houses and not religious houses. This means that they have not the same financial support as the majority religion in Turkey. The participants also visited a local burial place.

A Mosque in Sleepyville

This activity explored a dispute over the building of a new mosque in a traditionally Christian area through the simulation of a town council meeting. The participants were assigned with roles that had different perspectives on the conflict and got some time to prepare their statements and their votes for the town council meeting. A participant got the role as mayor and organized the meeting. After the meeting there was a reflection about the process.

Take a Step Forward

In the exercise ‘Take a Step Forward’ each participant got a role, e.g. a retired worker or a person with dissabilities. They were asked different reflection questions for getting into the role. Then they had to line up beside each other and different statements were read out, e.g. ‘I feel my language and culture are respected in the society I live in’. If they could answer yes, they took a step forward. Finally, the participants reflected on their position in relation to the others. One of the reflections were that despite some of the participant had the same role, there was a difference regarding how many step they took. This difference was explained by the the different national contexts that the roles were imagined in.

Change Your Glasses

This exercise was about exploring the locality through someone else’s eyes. The participants were divided into groups, and each group chose a group of people living at the margin of society. Then they had to go out and explore the local society through that person’s eyes. It was not the point to act out the role, but to imagine how it would be to be that person. When exploring the local society the participants had to photo document the challenges that they experienced. Back home the participants shared their photos.
